PLA vs PETG: Which Should You Choose for Your 3D Print?
A practical comparison of PLA and PETG for UAE 3D printing — strength, heat resistance, finish, cost, and when to pick each.
If you're ordering a custom 3D print in the UAE, the first real decision is the material. For most parts the choice comes down to two filaments: PLA and PETG. Both print beautifully, both are affordable, and both are stocked at WhyPrint — but they behave very differently once the part leaves the printer.
This guide walks through the practical differences so you can pick with confidence.
The short answer
- Choose PLA for visual prototypes, miniatures, props, decorative objects, and anything that lives indoors.
- Choose PETG for functional parts, anything that touches water, anything left in a hot car, and parts that need to flex slightly without snapping.
If your part will sit in direct UAE summer sun or inside a parked vehicle, do not pick PLA. It will deform around 55–60°C, which is well within the temperatures a dashboard reaches in Dubai or Abu Dhabi by 11am.
Strength and toughness
PLA is stiffer than PETG — it resists bending more, which is great for dimensional accuracy. But PLA is also brittle: drop a PLA part on tile and it can crack along a layer line.
PETG is slightly less stiff but far tougher. It absorbs impact, flexes a few degrees before failing, and has excellent layer adhesion. For a clip, hinge, bracket, or anything that gets handled, PETG is the safer bet.
Heat resistance
This matters more in the UAE than almost anywhere else.
- PLA softens around 55°C. A car interior in summer easily exceeds 70°C.
- PETG holds its shape up to ~70°C and tolerates short excursions higher.
For outdoor signage, automotive parts, or anything stored in a warehouse without air conditioning, choose PETG.
Surface finish
PLA wins on looks. It prints with crisp corners, sharp text, and a satin surface that takes paint and primer well. It's the go-to for display models, cosplay props, and architectural visualisations.
PETG has a slight gloss and is a bit more prone to fine stringing between features, though we tune our printers to minimise this. It sands well but takes paint slightly less evenly than PLA.
Water and chemicals
PLA slowly absorbs moisture and isn't suitable for parts that get wet repeatedly. PETG is water-resistant and chemical-resistant, which is why it's used for bottles and food containers in industry. For anything that lives near a sink, in a bathroom, or outdoors, PETG is the right call.
Cost
The price difference is small. At WhyPrint, PLA starts at AED 0.40/g and PETG at AED 0.50/g. For a typical 50g part, you're looking at about 5 dirhams of difference.
Quick decision table
- Indoor display piece → PLA
- Phone or tablet stand for the office → PLA is fine
- Phone mount for the car → PETG
- Replacement clip, bracket, or hinge → PETG
- Cosplay armour or props → PLA
- Outdoor planter or garden tag → PETG
- Tabletop miniature → PLA
- Bottle opener, kitchen tool → PETG
